I went to Haiti in search of the spirit of Toussaint L'Ouverture and his revolution in Haiti. I was further drawn to the island by its spiritual ceremonies. Altars are places where prayers and devotions are manifest into energy and move Haitians into divine spaces. Prayers and sacrifices are commonplace parts of these expressions. Westerners have been conditioned to believe Voodoo is about casting spells and trance. But to practitioners, it is the worship of nature and ancestors; a belief that the living exist side by side with the dead; and this dual world can be accessed through deities.
